Liverpool’s growth as a major port was paralleled by the expansion of the city throughout the Industrial Revolution. The port handled general cargo, freight, and raw materials such as coal and cotton, and in the 19th century became a major port of departure for Irish and English emigrants to North America. The Liverpool Maritime Mercantile City, which includes the Pier Head, Albert Dock, and William Brown Street, has since been designated a Unesco World Heritage Site.

Outside of its industrial origins, Liverpool’s reputation has been bolstered hugely by a legendary music scene. The Beatles and other music groups from the Merseybeat Era got their careers underway at the Cavern Club, one of a number of live music venues in the city centre.

Liverpool is also the home of two Premier League football clubs, Liverpool and Everton, matches between the two being known as the Merseyside derby. The Grand National horse race takes place annually at Aintree Racecourse on the outskirts of the city.
